RICO SUPERA A LITUANIA 80-73
AUCKLAND (FIBA
U19 World Championship) - A remarkable
comeback has seen Puerto Rico upset European
runner up Lithuania on day one of the FIBA
U19 World Championship, recording an 80-73
victory at the ASB Stadium in Auckland.
Behind eight points from both Vytenis
Cizauskas and Gediminas Bertasius, Lithuania
surged to a commanding 31-14 quarter time
lead, finding numerous holes in the Puerto
Rican defence.
Puerto Rico contributed to their own
situation though, missing their first
8-three point attempts and their first five
free throw attempts.
It wasn’t until Isaac Sosa nailed his first
attempt from the perimeter with 6:19
remaining in the second quarter that Puerto
Rico came alive. Two more long range shots
from Sosa brought Puerto Rico within nine
points which would be the half time margin,
48-39.
Puerto Rico upped the defensive intensity in
the second half, led by Jio Fontan, not
allowing Lithuania to feed the post in the
half court and restricting the Europeans to
just 14 points for the quarter.
Trailing 62-60 at the last break, Puerto
Rico soon erased the margin and took a five
point lead, 72-67, with 3:31 to play. While
Lithuania closed to within one point, some
clutch free throw shooting from Carlos
Lopez, and two turnovers by Lithuania in the
last minute saw Puerto Rico close out with a
seven point margin.
Sosa was outstanding for Puerto Rico with 18
points and 5 rebounds, and he was very well
supported by forward Kevin Young (20 points,
12 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks) and
livewire guard Mike Rosario (17 points).
For Lithuania, Cizauskas (15 points and 6
rebounds) and Dovydas Redikas (15 points)
led the way. Lithuania now face Angola in a
must win match at ASB Stadium tomorrow
night, while Puerto Rico play Greece in the
preceding game.

En San Germán los Atléticos derrotaron a los
Piratas de Quebradillas 89 a 85 en un final
controversial.
Los árbitros abandonaron el tabloncillo
quedando ocho segundos luego de fuertes
reclamaciones del banco Pirata y el
lanzamiento de objetos a la cancha.
La jugada controversial fue un corte de
Jesse Pellot-Rosa quedando doce segundos y
en la jugada Christopher "Fifo" Vega
convirtió un doble para poner el marcador
89-85.
Los Atléticos dominaron gran parte del juego
y en ese primer parcial la ofensiva de
Maurice Baker fue crucial, anotando dos
triples corridos para dejar a los locales
con ventaja 28-27. Baker hizo 10 puntos por
los Atléticos y por Quebradillas Shawn
Redhage 9.
San Germán aprovechó el mal manejo de balón
por parte de los Piratas y al mismo tiempo
tuvieron un buen parcial a larga distancia
para dominar la primera mitad 52-43. Jesse
Pellot-Rosa contaba con 14 puntos y Maurice
Baker 12. Los sangermeños tiraron de 41-20
de campo incluyendo cinco triples y 8-7 del
tiro libre.
Shawn Redhage llevaba 15 puntos por los
Piratas y Peter John Ramos 11 por
Quebradillas. Los Piratas hicieron 12
errores ante solamente uno de los locales.
En el tercer parcial los Atléticos se
despegaron 72-55 luego de doble de Jesse
Pellot-Rosa quedando 3:12, pero los Piratas
regresaron con avance de 10-0 comandados por
Marcus Williams para pegarse 72-65. Williams
hizo otro doble quedando 4.5 segundos para
dejar el marcador 75-68.
Baker anotó nuevamente en el cuarto periodo
y sus triples junto a la ofensiva de
Wolkowyski y Pellot los mantuvieron al
comando. Quebradillas se llegó a pegar con
triple de Joel Jones, doble de Redhage y dos
tiros libres de Marcus Williams para
completar un avance de 7-0 quedando 37.4
segundos.
En la próxima jugada Wolkowyski perdió el
balón que fue cortado por Joel Jones pero
rápidamente Pellot la recuperó para desatar
la ira del banco Pirata alegando falta
personal.
Jesse Pellot-Rosa anotó 24 puntos, Rubén
Wolkowyski 22 y Maurice Baker 17 por los
Atléticos que tienen marca de 2-0.
En causa perdida Marcus Williams anotó 29
puntos y Shawn Redhage 22.
